Why I Am a Good CommunicatorAs an AP student and aspiring teacher, I have always wondered about the value of writing an essay on why I am a good communicator. It seems that most students write essays based on the 'I' of the writer rather than a vision of the whole group or the purpose for writing the essay in the first place. Although this is a good way to express your thoughts, it does not give the reader a true picture of who you are.To be a great communicator, you must also think like a reader. The best way to learn how to write an essay on why I am a good communicator is to go into your mind and re-imagine what a better way to communicate would look like. Here are five steps for thinking like a reader.Think of yourself as a reader. As a teacher, I always encourage my students to imagine themselves as readers of their own essays. By seeing yourself this way, you will immediately be better able to look at your own essay objectively. This will give you a better understanding of your subject and will encourage you to write the essay from a reader's perspective.Read. As a reader, you are presented with a lot of information on a daily basis. You need to come up with a system for scanning through the information and keeping it organized so that you can find what you need when you need it. Identifying and using your daily lists will help you create an essay that is both fully structured and makes sense.Observe. When reading a book, read on and look at how the author is arranging his or her information and pictures. What situations are they addressing?List. Write down all the ways in which you can use information to structure your essay. This will help you organize the essay and keep it simple. If you start to become tired of organizing your material, you can always go back and edit your essay a bit.Choose. Do not be afraid to write down things you already know. People love to know that someone took the time to find out this information and that you chose to share i t with them. If you want people to think that you are good at something, it helps to know that you are confident enough to share it with them.Being a great communicator doesn't mean that you just present information to the reader; you also need to be a reader and a thinker. By re-imagining yourself as a reader, you will be better able to think about your essay on why I am a good communicator and will be more likely to come up with new ways to approach your essay.
